About TestAS exam

The TestAS (test for foreign students) is a central, internationally recognized, standardized study aptitude test for foreign students. TestAS tests cognitive abilities that are important for successful studies. Perfect German is a licensed TestAS examination center and offers the test four times a year .

  • Who can take the test?

    International prospective students who would like to apply to study at a German university.

  • What is the benefit of taking the test?

    • The test results will help you decide which course you want to study.
    • After the test, you can more realistically assess your prospects for successful studies.
    • With the help of the test, you will get to know the typical requirements of your desired course of study.
    • With good test results, you can increase your chances of getting a place at a university in Germany

    However, this test does not replace a language proficiency test or aptitude test that exist in individual subjects.

  • What are the requirements for taking the test?

    In order to be able to take the exam successfully, language skills (German or English) at level B1 (or higher) are required. Specific knowledge or expertise is not required. The TestAS does not measure any aspects of personality, motivation or interests.

  • How can I register for the test?

    You can only register online via the TestAS website. Please register in good time, as there are only a few exam dates per year.

  • How much does TestAS cost?

    The TestAS examination fee is € 135

  • How is the exam structured?

    The TestAS is a written exam. You can take the TestAS in English or German. The exam consists of three modules: an online language test, the core test and a specialist module. When registering, there are a total of four specialist modules to choose from:

    • Humanities, cultural and social sciences
    • Mathematics, computer science and natural sciences
    • Engineering
    • Economics

    The online test (language screening) is a language test that tests general language skills in German or English. Duration: approx. 30 minutes. The core test measures skills that are necessary for all fields of study. Duration: approx. 110 minutes. The subject module tests cognitive skills that are necessary for successful studies in certain courses. Duration: approx. 145–150 minutes. The exam takes a total of 5 hours.   • What do I have to bring to the test?

    • valid ID or passport with photo
    • Letter of admission
    • Ballpoint pen with a black or blue refill
  • How is the evaluation of the exam going?

    The evaluation of the exam takes about 4 weeks and is carried out centrally by the TestDaF Institute. After this time, the results can be viewed on the TestAS online portal. The respective universities themselves decide how the test is evaluated. Ask about the admission requirements at the respective university.

  • How often can you take the TestAS?

    The test can be repeated several times.

  • Can I only repeat part of the TestAS?

    No, the exam has to be repeated in full.
